Frequently Asked Questions — Kerala DA

What is Dearness Allowance (DA) for Kerala government employees?

Dearness Allowance (DA) is a cost-of-living adjustment paid to Kerala State Government employees and pensioners to offset the impact of inflation. It is calculated as a percentage of the basic pay and is revised twice a year — generally with effect from 1 January and 1 July — through Government Orders issued by the Finance Department. DA forms a significant part of the monthly salary and is also counted for several other benefits.

How do I calculate my DA from basic pay?

DA is calculated as: DA = Basic Pay × DA Rate %. For example, if your basic pay is ₹42,500 and the current DA rate is 35%, your monthly DA = 42,500 × 35 ÷ 100 = ₹14,875. If you draw grade pay or personal pay, those are added to the basic pay to form the DA base before applying the percentage. Just enter your figures in the calculator above to get the exact amount instantly.

What is the current DA rate for Kerala government employees in 2026?

For employees under the 11th Pay Revision Commission (Master Scale 2019), the Dearness Allowance rate is 35%, effective from July 2025. DA is revised every six months, so a further revision for the January 2026 instalment may be announced by Government Order. The calculator is pre-filled with the latest published rate, and you can change it to match your pay slip if a newer G.O. has been issued.

Is DA calculated on basic pay only, or on basic plus grade pay?

For Kerala 11th PRC employees, DA is calculated on the basic pay in the revised Master Scale. If you receive grade pay, personal pay or stagnation increment that is treated as pay for DA purposes, these are added to the basic to form the DA base. The calculator lets you add grade pay and personal pay under the optional fields so the DA base reflects your actual pay structure.

How often is DA revised in Kerala?

Dearness Allowance is normally revised twice a year, with effect from 1 January and 1 July, based on the movement of the cost-of-living (Consumer Price) index. The revised rate is notified through a Government Order, and the increase is often paid with arrears from the effective date. When a new rate is announced, the difference for past months is paid separately as DA arrears.

What is the difference between DA and DA arrears?

DA is the dearness allowance payable in your current monthly salary at the prevailing rate. DA arrears are the back-pay you are owed when a DA hike is announced with retrospective effect — i.e. the difference between the old and new DA for the months between the effective date and the date the revised DA actually starts being paid. Use this page for your current monthly DA, and the DA Arrear Calculator for month-wise arrear back-pay.

Is Dearness Allowance taxable?

Yes. Dearness Allowance is fully taxable as part of salary income for government employees. It is added to your gross salary and taxed according to the income tax slab applicable to you under the regime you choose. You can use the Income Tax Calculator on this site to estimate your tax liability including DA.

About Dearness Allowance in Kerala

Dearness Allowance (DA) is a cost-of-living allowance paid to Kerala State Government employees and pensioners to neutralise the erosion of purchasing power caused by inflation. It is expressed as a percentage of basic pay and is revised periodically — typically with effect from 1 January and 1 July each year — through Government Orders issued by the Finance Department.

The DA amount is simply basic pay multiplied by the DA rate. For an employee drawing a basic pay of ₹42,500 at the current 35% rate, the monthly DA works out to ₹14,875. Where grade pay or personal pay is treated as pay for DA purposes, it is added to the basic to form the DA base before the percentage is applied.

For employees under the 11th Pay Revision Commission (revised Master Scale 2019), DA has moved up in steps — 15% from January 2022 to the current 35% from July 2025. When a revision is announced with retrospective effect, the back-pay for the intervening months is paid separately as DA arrears — for which you should use the dedicated DA Arrear Calculator. This page is for your current monthly DA. Always confirm the applicable rate against your latest pay slip or the most recent Government Order.
